Colours of Courage Trust was honoured to welcome Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Health and Mass Media, on an official visit to the Tellippalai Trail Cancer Hospital on 27 June 2026.
The Minister was accompanied by Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media; Dr. Sathasivam Sridharan, Deputy Director-General (Planning); and Dr. Salinda Bandara, Additional Secretary – Engineering Services.
Representing Colours of Courage Trust, Trail Co-founder Nathan Sivagananathan joined the visit.
The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the hospital's contribution to delivering quality cancer care to patients in the Northern Province. It also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the Government, healthcare professionals, and organisations such as Colours of Courage Trust in further strengthening cancer care facilities across Sri Lanka.
The Tellippalai Trail Cancer Hospital remains a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, commitment, and a shared vision of ensuring better access to quality cancer care for all Sri Lankans.
On 25 November 2019, Colours of Courage Trust commenced construction of the Karapitiya Trail Cancer Hospital, marking an important milestone in its mission to strengthen cancer care in Sri Lanka.
The project was initiated following the success of Trail 2016 – The Walk Back, a 670-kilometre journey from Point Pedro to Dondra Head that brought together thousands of Sri Lankans in support of improving cancer care. The initiative was undertaken to raise funds for a new cancer treatment facility at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.
The proposed 10-storey facility was designed as an extension to the existing Cancer Unit at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. Plans for the hospital included radiology and chemotherapy facilities, oncology wards, a paediatric ward, a bone marrow transplant unit, outpatient and pharmacy services, an ICU, operating theatres, and an auditorium for medical and conference facilities.
The project represents a collaboration between Colours of Courage Trust and the Ministry of Health, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in June 2018 and the completion of the necessary design and statutory approval processes. The hospital's design was developed in consultation with the medical and administrative teams at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital to address the needs of patients and healthcare providers.
The commencement ceremony was attended by members of the Colours of Courage Trust, supporters of the Trail initiative, representatives from the Ministry of Health and the National Health Development Fund, and religious leaders representing Sri Lanka's four major faiths.
The commencement of construction marked the beginning of a significant new chapter in the Trail journey—one driven by the collective support of communities, donors, partners, and individuals united by a shared vision of improving access to quality cancer care.
